Today I learned that the correct English spelling is “biryani” and not “biriyani.”

In my mind the mental model has always been bi-ri-ya-ni because that’s how we say it in Malayalam (ബിരിയാണി).

Turns out the widely accepted English spelling drops that extra ‘i’.

Both refer to the same dish, but if you’re writing it in English, it’s biryani.
