My Mazda 6 key fob died today and I couldn’t unlock or start the car the usual way. Turns out, you can still start the car by holding the dead key fob directly against the start button and pressing it.
This works because key fobs have a passive RFID chip inside that doesn’t need battery power. When you touch it to the button, the reader picks up the signal at close range.
