Today I learned that many South and Southeast Asian scripts, like Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Odia, Burmese, Khmer, Javanese, and Balinese, have rounded letterforms because they were traditionally written on palm leaves.

I first heard about this on a podcast, where they explained that when writing on palm leaves, straight vertical and horizontal strokes could tear the surface. To prevent this, scribes developed curved characters, which influenced the way these scripts look today.
